When you are visiting Amsterdam, it is a good idea to know about some of the main events that are taking place in the city. That way, you can rub shoulders with the locals, and get involved in some fabulous community occasions.

Firstly, make sure to check out the temporary exhibitions taking place in Amsterdam’s museums and galleries. The lovely Molenmuseum, for instance, is home to plenty of amazing international photography exhibitions that change throughout the year. The Amsterdam Music Festival is perfect for lovers of contemporary music, and the annual European Championship Sand Sculpture Festival is something very different! You will be amazed at all of the weird and wonderful shapes that can be made in sand. Foodies will adore the numerous food festivals that pop up in the city throughout the year, including the Yada Yada Market which features fresh produce and world cuisine, and the Pure Markt in the last 6 months of every year. Het Bacchus Wijnfestival, moreover, is the perfect option for anyone who wants to sample some of the finest wines from the four corners of the globe. Get (vicariously) active with sporting events such as the TCS Amsterdam Marathon, or soak up the culture during one of the city’s world famous film festivals. Films with a View is a great summer festival hosted on the rooftops of the city, whilst Pluk De Nacht (i.e. ‘seize the night’) is a lovely and atmospheric events for night owls. The city hosts several festivals especially for children too, such as the creative Verhalen Festival and the exciting Arrival of Sinterklaas in the run up to Christmas.
