Zaanse Schans
Try to pronounce this.. The Zaanse Schans is a monumental environment, just half an hour by bus near the city Zaandam. At the Zaanse Schans you can find old windmills. Windmills that go way back! Some even still work at the moment. The town right next to the Zaanse Schans gives a nice view on what the architecture looked like a few hundred years ago. The color green has taken over this village! Combined with white and red, these houses are very special. They are made from wood.
You can drop by the town Zaandam itself as well. This small city is recently renovated and has the same style as the houses near the Zaanse Schans. If you want to do some shopping, this city is very nice to visit. It’s not as busy as Amsterdam and you have a big variety of stores and brands here.
Castle Muiderslot
Going into a different direction, you can visit Castle Muiderslot, which is located in Muiden. This nice little town is located southeast from Amsterdam. You can take a bus to the castle or you can go by bike! If you want to go by bike, please be aware that the distance can be quite challenging if you’re not used to ride a bike.. In that case, take a bus or taxi to the castle! The castle looks from the inside as if the time stood still. And also the garden is as if nobody ever changed it a few hundred years ago. They grow vegetables that are not common anymore.
